10A Variable Voltage Lab Supply

A versatile desk/lab power supply capable of delivering over 10 Amperes of current, with a voltage range adjustable from approximately 2V to 30V.

For this project, I utilized a toroidal transformer from Velleman, rated at 12A. Toroidal transformers are exceptionally well-suited for such applications due to their reduced Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and minimal hum/noise, which is crucial for my audio projects. Additionally, they are more compact while maintaining the same current capabilities, although they do come at a higher cost. I had to wait quite a while for this specific transformer, but it was well worth it.

I built this power supply back in 2009, and it has been reliably serving me ever since without any failures or modifications. Building your own custom power supply offers several advantages, including tailoring it to your specific needs and ensuring high quality—especially important given the variable quality of many imported products today.

If I were to rebuild it or create another one, it would still be a linear design. I would also incorporate more advanced digital voltage/current meters and smarter thermal protection features for enhanced reliability and user experience.
My skills were much thinner than they are now, and I arrogantly insisted on doing my own design (the first cost me a lot of money). This design is robust.
